Explore La Huasteca: One of Mexico’s Most Biodiverse Regions with Over 2,000 Species of Flora & Rich Wildlife
La Huasteca & Sierra Gorda is a geographical and cultural region located along the Gulf of Mexico coast, including parts of the states of Tamaulipas, Veracruz, Puebla, Hidalgo, San Luis PotosÃ, Querétaro, and Guanajuato. It is one of the most biodiverse regions in Mexico, with more than 2,000 species of plants, and is also very rich in wildlife such as parrots, macaws, spider monkeys, owls, eagles, toucans, deer, jaguars, collared peccaries, raccoons, and various species of reptiles and insects. The area is very rugged, with very high mountains and deep canyons; due to its karst origin, many formations are caused by the erosion of limestone called sinkholes. This area is highly valued for its wide diversity of flora and fauna, due to the varied microclimates created by the rugged terrain and large rainfall variations. The Huasteca culture has had a strong influence since the pre-Hispanic period; Huapango is the dominant musical style in the Sierra Gorda and is mainly manifested in the festivals in Xichú, Pinal de Amoles, and San JoaquÃn, where the Huasteca influence is greater. Most of the population lives in small communities with fewer than 500 inhabitants, and there are no social conflicts in the area.
ITINERARY:
Day 01 – Departure from Mexico City
Leaving Mexico City in the morning, we visit the Magic Town of Bernal to climb the boulder and recharge our energy. Afterward, we will continue to Pinal de Amoles where we will spend the night.
Day 02 – Edward James surrealistic gardens
Before dawn, we head to the Cuatro Palos Viewpoint to enjoy the spectacular view. After breakfast in the community, we continue to Jalpan, where we’ll admire one of the Missions established by Junipero Serra. Â In the afternoon, we’ll wander through whimsical concrete structures, winding staircases, and hidden pathways designed by the eccentric artist Edward James. Overnight in Aquismon.
Day 03 – Tamul Waterfall
At dawn, we begin an unforgettable adventure at El Sótano de las Golondrinas, one of the world’s most impressive sinkholes. As the sun rises, thousands of parrots and swifts spiral upward in a breathtaking natural spectacle. After this magical encounter with nature, we continue to the turquoise waters of the Tampaón River. Here, the journey leads us to the majestic Tamul Waterfall, cascading 105 meters into the river, where mist and rainbows create a truly awe-inspiring scene. This day combines birdwatching, river adventure, and the magnificent beauty of the Huasteca Potosina. Overnight in Rio Verde.
Day 04 – Laguna de la Media Luna
In the morning, we’ll enjoy a refreshing experience at Laguna de la Media Luna, a natural spring of crystal-clear, warm waters where you can swim, snorkel, or dive among submerged trees and natural springs, while nature lovers stroll shaded trails to observe local flora and birds. In the afternoon, we’ll depart for San Luis Potosà City, where colonial charm and vibrant plazas await. Overnight in San Luis PotosÃ.
Day 05 – San Luis PotosÃ
Discover the cultural heart of San Luis Potosà City on a full-day tour through its elegant colonial center. Stroll the beautiful plazas framed by baroque and neoclassical architecture, including the Cathedral and Government Palace. Visit the National Mask Museum, showcasing Mexico’s rich artistic traditions. A highlight of the day is the Leonora Carrington Museum, dedicated to the surrealist artist whose sculptures and paintings captivate the imagination. With its blend of history, art, and vibrant urban life, San Luis Potosà offers a unique cultural experience that reflects both colonial heritage and modern creativity. Overnight in San Luis Potosi.
Day 06 – Queretaro
After breakfast, we’ll depart for Queretaro City, a UNESCO World Heritage Site renowned for its history and charm. Upon arrival, we’ll take a guided walking tour through the beautifully preserved colonial downtown. Queretaro’s harmonious blend of history, culture, and modern life makes it one of Mexico’s most captivating destinations, offering visitors an enriching glimpse into the nation’s colonial past.
Day 07 – Return to Mexico City
At noontime, we´ll depart Queretaro towards Mexico City, enjoying the scenic drive through the Bajio region. Upon arrival in Mexico City, we´ll conclude the tour with a drop-off at your hotel or the airport, depending on your travel plans. End of services.

CURIOUS TIDBITS
Tamul Waterfall
Cascading over 105 meters (330 feet), this waterfall is the tallest in San Luis Potosà state. Enjoy the upriver ride in a traditional kayak, and body rafting downriver with the current!
CAVE OF SWALLOWS
Sótano de las Golondrinas in San Luis Potosà is one of the world’s deepest vertical caves at 370 meters. It’s famous for the spectacular morning flights of swifts and parakeets.
BERNAL MONOLITH
The Peña de Bernal is the third-largest monolith in the world, towering at about 433 meters (1,421 feet). It is believed to be around 65 million years old.
EDWARD JAMES' SURREAL GARDEN
Las Pozas in Xilitla, San Luis PotosÃ, was created by British poet Edward James. Spanning over 80 acres, it features surreal sculptures, staircases, and buildings intertwined with lush jungle.
